Synopsis: Alida, a reclusive fiction writer, is diagnosed with dementia and must depend upon Beth, a troubled young caretaker, to complete her autobiography. In a symbiotic battle of wills, the two delve into the dark woods of Alida's past, unearthing a story full of secret tragedy that shatters their notions of language, loneliness and essential self. Filled with wry humor, Breadcrumbs is a surprising, compassionate and moving story that transcends tragedy to explore the larger mysteries of identity, family, trust and love.

CAST BREAKDOWN:

NOTE: All Ethnicities, AEA and Non-AEA encouraged to audition.
NOTE: Both women play two roles, because in the course of the play Alida’s story is often dramatized.

ALIDA/YOUNG ALIDA: (a woman who should read in her 60s) OLDER ALIDA is a reclusive writer who is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s; she traverses from early stages to much more significant stages of the disease in the course of the play. Independent, strong, with a wry dry humor, can be truculent, capable of poetry, passion, and ultimately, great vulnerability and need. YOUNGER ALIDA is a 10-year-old child with an old soul, life has already taught her that things are not easy, a storyteller who sees things darkly, and is ultimately trying to please her mother, whom she loves desperately despite her mother’s shortcomings.

BETH/ALIDA’S MOTHER: (a woman late 20s/early 30s) BETH is a chaotic drifter, somewhat lost, drifting from boyfriend to boyfriend with all her stuffed animals in tow, duplicitous when she needs to be, charming, flaky, vulnerable, curious, passionate about writing, actually seeking some sort of direction, permanence and family. ALIDA’S MOTHER is a woman in her late 20s/early 30s without her own resources, relying on the kindness of various men for her survival, trying to do her best to bring up her daughter Alida, a young girl she doesn’t understand. She loves her daughter fiercely, but is often confounded by her. Maternal, flirtatious, impatient, desperate.
